Why is Grooming My Cat Important?
Shedding or moulting is the natural process of losing dead hair, and will occur to some extent, all year round. Regular grooming helps to promote a healthy coat and helps minimise vomiting from hairballs. Grooming your cat at home is an excellent way of spending quality time with your cat and provides a great opportunity to monitor their physical health.
Cat Grooming 101
Grooming should be a positive experience for both you and your cat, where you can spend quality time together and strengthen your human-pet bond.
- Always choose a time when your cat is feeling relaxed and happy before grooming them.
- Ideally, short-haired cats should be groomed once weekly and long-haired cats daily.
- A rubber mitten is a good introductory brush for both short-haired and long-haired cats.
- The grooming equipment needed for short-haired and long-haired cats differs – chat to your friendly veterinary nursing team for recommendations specific for your cat. It can take a few tries before you find their favourite brush!
What about knots and matts?
- If you come across a fur matt/knot, start from the root of the hair (closest to the skin surface) and slowly tease the matt apart.
- Do not use scissors to cut matts out especially if you are unable to clearly see the skin surface - your cat may accidentally get cut.
- Seek assistance from your veterinary team if the matts are becoming too large or difficult to manage at home safely.
- If your cat shows any signs of discomfort, grooming should be stopped. Try again at another time when your cat is relaxed and aim to have smaller goals that your cat can tolerate for each grooming session at home.
- Finish each session on a positive note, with treats, cuddles and praise.
